Gothenburg University has eight academic schools, each actively involved in community and international programmes. The university puts much importance on the balance between education and research, so the departments all have adequate research and information resource facilities.

Sahlgrenska Academy


The Sahlgrenska Academy conducts some of the world's most advanced medical researches, promoting patient-oriented approaches to the study of disease. The Faculty of Science is home to Sweden's primary marine science studies, and has access to top of the line research vessels and field stations.

Faculty of Science


The Faculty of Science leads the field in marine research, taking advantage of Gothenburg's coastal location. About 80 percent of marine research in Sweden is conducted by the university.


Faculty of Arts


The Faculty of Arts teaches more than 20 foreign languages, including Japanese and Chinese. A Medieval Committee conducts researches, conferences, and seminars about medieval culture and every imaginable aspect of the Middle Ages.

School of Economics and Commercial Law


The School of Economics and Commercial Law is one of the university's most acclaimed units. It does research work on diverse fields, including environment, finance, and politics. It is the field leader for business research in Sweden, with strong links to many other business education and research units around the world.

Information Technology (IT) University


The Information Technology (IT) University works in close cooperation with Chalmers, a neighboring university in Gothenburg. New buildings at the Lindolmen Science Park have been erected for conducting interdisciplinary studies that explore the practical application of IT into virtually every field.
